Buffett's kids use dad's ideas to invest in giving

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? As they work to give away part of Warren Buffett's roughly $47 billion fortune, his three children have adopted an approach that looks remarkably similar to their father's technique for making all that money.

Like Buffett, each relies on tiny staffs. And just like their father invests only in businesses he understands, they restrict their giving to their targeted projects.

Warren Buffett doesn't direct how the foundations created by Susie, Howard and Peter Buffett spend the estimated $2.6 billion in Berkshire Hathaway stock they'll receive, but his children seem to have absorbed his philosophy.

"I think the only pressure I feel from him is making sure we're smart about how we spend the money," said Howard Buffett. "He's had no influence on where we give money, but he's had a big influence on how we go about it."

Buffett's children have focused on different topics, reflecting their divergent interests.

Howard Buffett is helping farmers in impoverished nations produce more to reduce world hunger. Susie Buffett is strengthening early childhood education and looking for ways to reduce teen pregnancy. And Peter Buffett wants to empower women and girls worldwide through education, collaboration and economic development to end violence against women.

"We're given this amazing opportunity to try and make change where we can," Peter Buffett said. "And being our father's children, we don't think small."

The Buffett children have all been running foundations their parents set up for them since the late 1990s, but they had to dramatically increase their giving after 2006 when Warren Buffett announced his overall giving plan and the children received their first annual gift of stock worth roughly $65 million to each of them.

They'll have to ramp up their giving again because Buffett's annual gifts of Berkshire Hathaway stock will increase to roughly $100 million to $125 million to each child next summer.

Although his children's foundations will each eventually receive stock worth about $2.6 billion, their charitable work is still overshadowed by their dad's main pledge to give the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation stock worth more than $44 billion.

Warren Buffett is also giving nearly $4.4 billion worth of stock to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named for the investor's first wife, who died in 2004. That organization promotes women's reproductive health and tries to limit the spread of nuclear weapons.

All three younger Buffetts said they're glad their father encouraged them to take risks, so they wouldn't be afraid to tackle difficult issues.

The Buffett children also said they are glad their parents had the foresight to set up separate foundations for each of them, so they could all go their own way.

Howard Buffett regularly travels to poverty-stricken parts of the world to talk with farmers and check up on projects his foundation has funded, but the 57-year-old often doesn't tell his dad where he's going until after he returns to avoid worrying him about the dangers of destinations like the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Howard Buffett, who raises corn and soybeans in Illinois, likes to get a close look at the challenges those farmers he's trying to help face. He said when he's travelling he's reminded of how his mother would try to help anyone in need she encountered.

"It's very hard for me to walk into those circumstances and not try to do something," he said.

In his giving, Howard Buffett tries to focus on programs that can be continued after the initial grant ends, so he doesn't support introducing expensive hybrid seeds and irrigation in places where farmers can't afford them.

The elder Buffett manages one of the world's largest conglomerates with a tiny staff of two dozen at its Omaha headquarters, and Howard, Susie and Peter run their foundations with staffs less than half that size.

Peter Buffett, 54, said the three children also have applied their father's belief in limiting his investments to areas he understands.

"You want to be as focused on an end goal as you can be," Peter Buffett said. "In a very practical way, it helps you say no."

Peter Buffett, who is a musician and composer, is working on leveling the playing field for women and girls worldwide through a variety of programs. He hopes that if girls, particularly in impoverished areas, can get access to more resources and education they'll be ready to play a larger role in their communities and decision making.

Peter Buffett's NoVo Foundation also support programs to help U.S. schools teach kids social and emotional skills and sound decision-making.

Susie Buffett said she enjoys trying to tackle messy, human problems that aren't easy to solve, much like her mom did.

"That comes directly from my childhood. It is what I watched my mother do," said Susie Buffett, 59. "She had me in the car with her at a very early age in the housing projects and deep in the community. She was very involved personally. It was not a check-writing thing. It was her being there."

Susie Buffett was always interested in education, but she decided to focus her giving on early childhood education after asking Omaha's schools superintendent where she could make the biggest difference.

Because Susie Buffett is the only one of Warren's children living in Omaha, she also uses her Sherwood Foundation to support Omaha nonprofits that help make the city a better place and help low-income neighborhoods.

Warren Buffett's decision to increase the amount of money he is giving his children's foundations indicates he supports their work, and he praised their philanthropy.

"Everything has impressed me," Buffett said "They're each doing things they have a special interest in which they have some special abilities too. And they work very hard at it."

Galaxy Note 2 release nears as multiple variants stroll through FCC (Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile)

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has placed itself among the most anticipated devices of the year. This is despite its different, larger form-factor, which manufacturers tried to introduce before, but failed to do so right. Of course, the announcement invitations are enough proof that the device is coming to the US soon, but here is a bit more to get excited about ? FCC filings.

There are 3 versions of the ?phablet? strolling through the Federal Communications Commission, all headed to their relative major carrier ? AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. We have the SGH-i317 for AT&T, the SCH-i605 for Verizon and the SGH-T889 for Verizon. All come with LTE-compatible radios. Even the T-Mobile version, which hasn?t yet launched its upcoming LTE network (some good future-proofing).

There is a bit of bad news attached to this FCC filing, though. Samsung made it seem like they were finally improving their strategy with the faster and headache-less Galaxy S3 release, but it seems we are back to the older ways. All carriers have the same Galaxy S3 variant with identical specs (except radios), which was not the case with the Galaxy S and S2.

Yes, there seem to be completely different versions of the Galaxy Note 2 coming to the states. Internals should be relatively similar, but differences in aesthetics can bring many issues. For one, it creates major compatibility issues with accessories. One may also not be satisfied with the variant dedicated to one?s carrier, making us go through the hassle of switching carriers (or conforming with a ?lesser? variant).

Well, at least it looks like this release will be much speedier. This was our major grunt about multiple device variants ? it usually causes device releases to be delayed. Everything seems to be going smoothly this time, so let?s wait until October 24th for the official announcement and see what Sammy has for us.

Top 6 Reasons Your Job Search Isn't Working | Glassdoor Blog

Landing your dream job takes more than just sending a resume and cover letter to prospective employers. The search is filled with potential for mistakes that can prevent you from simply obtaining an interview. Even if you?re certain you?re putting your best foot forward, you could be overlooking these six common mistakes made by job seekers:

Mistake #1: Failure to network

When it comes to job searching, it often comes down to who you know. Professional networking is a great way to get your foot in the door with a potential employer. Making these connections is the key to getting your resume directly into the hands of the person making hiring decisions. Don?t be shy. Visit career fairs and sign up with professional organizations to get to know other people in the industry you want to work in.

Mistake #2: Skipping the cover letter for online applications

The more information you provide during the application process, the better chance you have of landing an interview. Today, many applications and resumes are sent via online web forms that ask for specific information from job candidates. Even if it?s not strictly required, send a cover letter with every online application you submit. Doing so will not only make an impression, but it will give the hiring manager more insight into your background and put you one step ahead of other applicants. Two instances where sending a cover letter is not advised is when the job description specifically states not to send one, or there is no section in the online application to submit a cover letter. You might think this is a test of the hiring manager and brownie points will go to the applicant that goes above and beyond the requirements, but it isn?t. In fact, sending a cover letter when the job description explicitly says not to could be used to help weed out the candidates that don?t take the time to read the entire job description or lack attention to detail.

Mistake #3: Sending a generic cover letter

First impressions count. Viewed from the perspective of a hiring manager, sending a generic cover letter is lazy. With this shotgun approach, you may as well send your cover letter out to every company in the hospitality industry. Instead of sending a canned and generic letter, tailor the letter to your reader by focusing on the needs of the specific company and the details of the specific position for which you are applying. Do your homework and use your cover letter to demonstrate how your skills and experience could benefit the company. In today?s competitive job market, your cover letter must be so compelling that the hiring manager immediately sees you as their future employee.

Mistake #4: Procrastination

This isn?t the time to sit back and let opportunities come to you. In today?s job market, many employers receive hundreds of responses to their ad, enabling them to choose a qualified candidate quickly. If you found the job announcement weeks after its initial post date, it may already be too late to apply, even if you are the perfect candidate. Stay on top of the process by searching job boards as frequently as possible, giving yourself plenty of time to assemble a polished application package before the close date.

Mistake #5: You?re distracted

When searching for a job, especially online, it?s easy to become sidetracked. Taking a few minutes here and there to check your personal e-mail or reading what your friends are posting on Facebook can drain more time than you think. Finding a job requires a minimum of three hours of uninterrupted time where your primary focus is on the job searching process. Set realistic daily goals and don?t get distracted until you have completed your tasks. Preparing quality, tailored resumes and cover letters for each job application requires concentration and dedication.

Mistake #6: Not following up after interviews

After every interview, send a thank-you note promptly. Use this opportunity to thank the interviewer for their time, state what you learned about the organization during the interview, and how your skills and experience will help contribute to the organization. Also, try to mention something about yourself to help the interviewer remember which job applicant you were during the interview process. You want to stand out from the competition and be memorable.

Don?t forget to follow up on applications that haven?t yet netted you an interview, too. Many job seekers make the mistake of sending their resume and never following up to make sure the right person has received it. Remember, the hiring process can take some time, and with the online application process, it?s easy to feel like your resume lost its way down a black hole. If you haven?t heard back from the employer after sending your application, don?t be afraid to call or e-mail to ask about the status of the job opening. Doing so could get your resume the attention it deserves. ? Originally posted on onTargetjobs by Matthew O?Donnell

How to See Uranus in Telescopes This Weekend

The planet Uranus reaches opposition on Saturday (Sept. 29). This means that Uranus is directly opposite the sun in the sky.

Uranus rises will rise as the sun sets, and set as the sun rises. It will be highest in the sky at local midnight, roughly 1 a.m. if you are on Daylight Saving Time.

Uranus was discovered accidentally by William Herschel on the night of March 13, 1781. All the other planets had been known since prehistoric times, so this was a major discovery in its time, and made Herschel famous.

The reason Uranus had remained undiscovered for so long is that, although it is quite large, the third largest planet after Jupiter and Saturn, it is very far away from the sun, so is very dimly lit. If you know exactly where to look, it is just possible to see Uranus with the naked eye, but most of us need binoculars and a good chart to spot it among the thousands of stars of similar brightness.

When Herschel first observed it, he was unsure what he had seen: a nebula, a comet, or a planet. After a night or two, he saw that it had moved, so it couldn?t be a nebula. It didn?t change size or shape, so he knew it wasn?t a comet.

Once the object's orbit was determined, Herschel knew he had found the sun?s seventh planet: 31,763 miles (51,118 km.) in diameter, four times larger than the Earth. It orbits at 19 times the distance from Earth to the sun, twice as far from the sun as Saturn. [Amazing Photos of Uranus]

How to see Uranus

In binoculars, Uranus is indistinguishable from a star. Look for it currently in the constellation Pisces. [Uranus: Inside and Out (Infographic)]

Opposition night is not the best night to look for it, because the full moon will be nearby flooding the sky with light. Look for it instead tonight, or in a week?s time when the moon has moved on.

Don?t try to use Pisces to find it, because this is a dim constellation. Instead, start with the Great Square of Pegasus, a conspicuous large square of stars. This will be in the southern sky (of the Northern Hemisphere) about two thirds of the way from the horizon to directly overhead at local midnight, or in the eastern sky earlier in the evening.

Use the two stars on the left side of the Great Square, Alpheratz and Algenib, and project a line joining them down towards the horizon. At almost exactly the same distance below the bottom star you will see (in binoculars) what looks like a double star. These will be the two brightest ?stars? in this part of the sky.

The star on the left (in the Northern Hemisphere) is 44 Piscium. The ?star? on the right is not a star at all, but the planet Uranus. Pay close attention to the distance between these two objects, and check it again in a night or two. Uranus will have moved away to the right, the distance between star and planet increasing.

In binoculars, Uranus will look just like a star. In a small telescope with about 200x magnification, you will see a tiny blue-green disk. Uranus has 27 known moons, but these are all too tiny to be seen in a small telescope.

Strange Uranus facts

One of the most interesting things about Uranus is the tilt of its axis of rotation. Most planets rotate around a pole which points roughly at right angles to the plane of their orbit.

Uranus? pole is tipped over so that its axis is almost in the same plane as its orbit. As a result, the sun shines almost continuously on the northern half the planet for part of its year, and continuously on the southern half for another part of its year. The result is the most extreme seasonal variation found on any planet in the solar system.

When Herschel discovered Uranus, he needed to find a name for it. This was as big a deal in the 18th century as naming a stadium is today. Knowing who his chief patron was, he decided to name it after his king, George III: Georgium Sidus (George?s Star). Now George III was not very popular outside England, so there was a lot of resistance to this name. Finally Johann Bode suggested that it be named Uranus after the Greek God of the sky, Ouranos, and this was agreed to by all astronomers.

Unfortunately, this name causes pronunciation difficulties for most speakers of the English language. If it?s pronounced "ew-RAY-nus" it provokes laughter from sixth-graders. The alternate pronunciation, "EWR-a-nus" is not much better. Perhaps we should go back to the original Greek pronunciation, "OOR-a-nus."

How Mc Laren Cars Made it in Sports Car History

Since Mc Laren's team joined Formula 1 racing in 1966, a total of 106 teams have come and vanished. And two most infamous cars, Mc Laren and Ferrari have stood their way out since 1966. The giant car models have marked great contributions with the introduction of McLaren F1 (1993-'98) and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (2004-'09), and so far and still remained to be the greatest maker of sports racing cars.

McLaren F1 is a stylish and renowned sports car which is made by Mc Laren Automotive. It is recognized as the 'fastest road car in the world' by March 31, 1998 after the car's exterior was redesign by Peter Stevens. It sets the record speed of 231 mph (372 km/h) with rev limiter on, and 242.95 mph (391 km/h) with rev limiter removed.

Anyone will be amazed with the car's functionalities with its signature design and technologies. As compared with any other sports car, the auto features a ruggedly streamline form and is superiorly lighter. It also has a powerful engine designed to fit in the track's race.

The advanced design of this car has won numerous racing competitions including a record of 166 winnings out of 668. The popular sports automobile also holds the title for 12 drivers' titles, eight F1 constructors' championships, Indy 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Mc Laren racing is one of the most triumphant teams that joined the league of Grand prix motor racing. In fact since 1963, it is one of the prestigious car labels who have created some of the most iconic Formula 1 automobiles in the sports history. From the inner to outer design of these cars, they are built to win in the race.

One of the best cars in line with the famous sports car brand includes Le Mans 24 Hours which is formed to win in any race. It is regarded as the oldest sports car which has joined in an endurance racing. It is famously tagged as 'the Gran prix of endurance and efficiency' as the car can run for a period of 24 hours without stoppage and without any mechanical problem.

To be a Le Mans Driver is not easy. In fact, to be a driver, he has to pass an endurance test with the race. For those who are Le Mans fanatics, the car will celebrate its 90th year in the sports car industry in 2013.

Asia stocks up after Spain pledges to cut spending

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets rose Friday after Spain announced severe budget cuts meant to show international lenders and investors that the country is taking steps toward getting its debt under control.

The Spanish government on Thursday unveiled a draft budget for 2013 that cuts overall spending by ?40 billion ($51 billion). Wall Street spurted higher on the news. Many economists see the cost-cutting as a signal Spain is preparing to request financial aid from other governments and the European Central Bank.

Spain, whose banks have been hobbled by toxic assets, has so far been reluctant to ask for help because of the requirements that will likely be imposed in exchange for any aid.

Stocks were also helped by speculation that China's central bank will act soon to help the world's No. 2 economy.

Lorraine Tan, director at Standard & Poor's equity research in Singapore, said she believes the Chinese government is likely to introduce incentives to encourage domestic spending rather than making more money available for loans, as the U.S. Federal Reserve has done under its quantitative easing programs.

"Banks are indicating that they are not finding takers for loans," Tan said.

"The Chinese have a lot of flexibility ... the question is, they will only act on it if they think it will achieve something."

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.4 percent to 20,836.06. South Korea's Kospi added nearly 0.2 percent to 1,992.12 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.2 percent to 4,394.10. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, mainland China, Thailand and the Philippines also rose.

But Japan's Nikkei 225 index lost 0.8 percent to 8,876.77, sinking on a government report that showed industrial production fell a further 1.3 percent in August. Weak global and domestic demand is weighing on manufacturers, particularly electronics makers, who are facing intense competition from South Korean, Taiwanese and other Asian manufacturers.

The strong yen, which erodes overseas earnings and makes Japanese-made products relatively more expensive, is also eating into profits.

Major Japanese exporters got slammed. Toyota Motor Corp. fell 2.3 percent and Honda Motor Co. shed 2.7 percent. Ricoh Co. slid 3 percent.

Rising gold prices helped related shares. Hong Kong-listed Zijin Mining Co., China's largest gold miner, gained 2 percent. Australia's Newcrest Mining Ltd. jumped 3.8 percent.

Spain's budget announcement propelled Wall Street stocks to their first gain of the week, despite mixed data on the U.S. economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.5 percent to 13,485.97. The S&P 500 index rose 1 percent to 1,447.15. The Nasdaq composite index rose 1.4 percent to 3,136.60.

The U.S. government said the overall economy grew at a slower annual rate in the April-through-June quarter than it previously estimated. Companies cut orders for durable goods last month. But the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 49 cents to $92.34 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.87 to finish at $91.85 on the Nymex on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2932 from $1.2917 late Thursday in New York. The dollar fell to 77.50 yen from 77.62 yen.

More Republican leaders get behind Akin in Missouri race

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - More Republican leaders came to the side of Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin on Wednesday, a day after the deadline passed for him to withdraw from the race after controversial comments he made last month about rape.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee, which had cut off financial support to Akin, said on Wednesday it backs his campaign to defeat incumbent Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill in the November 6 election. Former Republican presidential contender Rick Santorum also endorsed Akin on Wednesday.

"There is no question that for Missourians who believe we need to stop the reckless Washington spending, rein-in the role of government in people's lives, and finally focus on growing jobs in this country that Todd Akin is a far more preferable candidate than liberal Senator Claire McCaskill," Rob Jesmer, NRSC executive director, said in a statement.

"As with every Republican Senate candidate, we hope Todd Akin wins in November and we will continue to monitor this race closely in the days ahead," Jesmer said.

He did not say whether the committee would change its mind about contributing to the Akin campaign.

Many leading Republicans nationally and in Missouri disavowed Akin after his remarks in a TV interview that women have a biological defense against "legitimate rape" that keeps them from getting pregnant. Akin apologized but was urged by prominent Republicans to drop out. The deadline for him to withdraw from the race passed on Tuesday.

The NRSC support came on the heels of word Tuesday from the Senate Conservatives Fund that it may put money into his campaign. The Missouri Republican Party also backed Akin on Tuesday after earlier saying he should consider quitting.

Santorum and U.S. Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina, a Tea Party leader and major backer of the Senate Conservatives Fund, endorsed Akin on Wednesday.

"Todd Akin is a principled conservative who is committed to winning and fighting for freedom in the U.S. Senate," they said in a joint statement. "Todd will work to stop reckless spending, stop the out of control debt, repeal the government takeover of health care, support our military and defend life at every stage."

Meanwhile, the Missouri Democratic Party said it filed a complaint Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission alleging Akin illegally changed his position on congressional earmarks in order to get contributions from the Senate Conservatives Fund. DeMint and the fund oppose earmarks, which Akin has at times defended.

"In an attempt to salvage his campaign, Todd Akin has agreed to change his position on earmarks in an effort to secure the support of a SuperPAC - brazen and shocking behavior that is a clear violation of federal campaign laws and House ethics rules," Mike Sanders, Missouri Democratic Party chairman, said in a news release. "As an elected member of Congress, Todd Akin should hold himself to a higher standard of conduct."

Akin's spokesman, Ryan Hite, did not return a call for comment on Wednesday on the Democrats' allegations. But Akin's campaign website responded on Friday to criticism from McCaskill about his alleged flip-flopping on earmarks.

"For the record Todd's position on earmarks has been clear and consistent and is not in conflict with Senator DeMint's ban on earmarks," the website stated.

?Winter's Bone? author Daniel Woodrell to speak at Spooner Hall ...

Thirteen people are bunched up in the corner of Frank?s North Star Tavern, 508 Locust St., leaning in to hear each other over the background noises of music and clinking glasses. They gather around a table littered with empty beer cans, and almost everyone is thumbing through their copy of ?Winter?s Bone.?

The PBR Book Club met Tuesday night to discuss the book in preparation for Daniel Woodrell?s visit to Lawrence. Woodrell, a University alum and the author of ?Winter?s Bone,? will be at The Commons in Spooner Hall from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. today. Film & media studies professor John Tibbetts will interview Woodrell about his writing process, and afterward there will be a question-and-answer session. This event is free and open to the public.

?We decided to make that event specifically about writing, so that will be an opportunity for students who are taking writing classes to come in and learn about his process and adapting books to film,? said Rachel Smalter Hall, adult programs librarian for the Lawrence Public Library.

Woodrell will also be interviewed by Brad Allen, director of the Lawrence Public Library, at Liberty Hall from 7:30 to 9 p.m. today. Raven bookstore will be on site selling copies of ?Winter?s Bone,? which attendees can get signed before or after the event.

Daniel Woodrell has written nine books, most of which are set in the Missouri Ozarks, where he was born. Woodrell dropped out of high school at 17 to join the Marines. Later, he received a BA from the University and an MFA from the Iowa Writers? Workshop.

Two of Woodrell?s books were adapted to films; the movie adaptation of ?Winter?s Bone? was released June 2010, and was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

?Winter?s Bone? centers on a teenage girl living in the Ozarks who is trying to take care of her family. When she is faced with the possibility of losing the family?s home, Ree Dolly goes on a search for her absent father, who manufactures methamphetamine and put their home up as collateral for bail.

Tanya Spacek, a junior from Rockford, Ill., is a member of the PBR Book Club. On Tuesday night, she joined in conversations about the book?s genre, attitude and key themes.

?Most people who think of white trash think of Jerry Springer, People of Walmart, that kind of thing,? Spacek said. ?But he was able to capture the mentality of these characters and portray them with strength. Their ability to care for themselves is all they have at this point, and they are getting things done and surviving.?

Rachel Smalter Hall said the themes in ?Winter?s Bone? are different from other books selected for Read Across Lawrence. Smalter Hall, director of Read Across Lawrence, said books are chosen based on their Kansas tie-ins and their ability to inspire conversation about important issues of our time. She said Woodrell?s novel has more provocative themes, and the selection has gotten more people involved with the program.

Smalter Hall also said that students are more inclined to read ?Winter?s Bone? than other books selected in the past, like ?The Wizard of Oz,? ?In Cold Blood? and ?To Kill a Mockingbird.?

?A lot of times those classic books are books people read as high school students,? she said. ?For someone who is decades beyond that in their lives, it?s an opportunity to go back and reflect, but for younger readers, they just read that for an English class a handful of years ago. Having an author that isn?t as widely read in the classroom does open that up for students at KU who might be interested but don?t want to feel like they?re doing homework.?

Read Across Lawrence is a collaboration of the Lawrence Public Library, the University libraries and Friends of the Lawrence Public Library. The libraries give away 1,000 free copies of the selected book each year and hold events to launch discussion.

There will be two more events after Woodrell?s visit: an all-ages trivia of ?Winter?s Bone? Saturday, Sept. 29, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library, and a showing of the movie at Liberty Hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Probability maps help sniff out food contamination

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Uncovering the sources of fresh food contamination could become faster and easier thanks to analysis done at Sandia National Laboratories' National Infrastructure Simulation and Analysis Center (NISAC).

The study, in the International Journal of Critical Infrastructures, demonstrates how developing a probability map of the food supply network using stochastic network representation might shorten the time it takes to track down contaminated food sources.

Stochastic mapping shows what is known about how product flows through the distribution supply chain and provides a means to express all the uncertainties in potential supplier-customer relationships that persist due to incomplete information.

If used on a larger scale, such methods also might assess the vulnerability of food supplies to wide-scale, deliberate contamination.

Tracking down the source of fresh food contamination can be difficult and time-consuming. Stephen Conrad (6924) says difficulties in adequately characterizing connections and product flows among producers, distributors and suppliers can contribute to significant uncertainty in assessing the risk of foodborne illness.

"This is often a serious problem when there is an outbreak of food poisoning in a particular region and the healthcare authorities cannot quickly trace the source of the outbreak," Stephen says.

When an outbreak occurs, epidemiologists must interview affected people to track down where foodborne exposures happened. Often those interviews take place weeks after the exposure, leading to inaccurate or incomplete information and making it difficult to pinpoint a likely food culprit. Once the tainted food has been identified, investigators must trace up through the food distribution supply chain to locate the source of contamination.

"Epidemiologists involved in trace back start behind the eight ball," Stephen says. "They attempt to reconstruct the pathway the contaminated food has traveled through the distribution network well after the fact."

Even at the supply chain level, investigating how food moves through the system is daunting. Stephen says supply chains vary widely from one food marketing system and agricultural sector to another. Some supply chain parts change frequently. Even within a single agricultural sector, some parts of the food supply chain may be characterized by enduring supplier/customer relationships, while others may be market-based and highly transitory.

Even industry insiders may not understand the supply chain map. Many only know "one up and one down" -- that is, they know only their direct supplier and direct customer. Some information about customers and suppliers can be proprietary and therefore hard to get, Stephen says.

In 2011, sprouts were the focus of a serious E. coli outbreak in Europe, but tracing contaminated products to their source proved difficult.

Sandia researchers applied the stochastic mapping technique to test data from the fresh sprout sector in a single state in the U.S., using a case study of the edible seed sprout distribution system as the basis of their computational model.

"Stochastic network representation provides the ability to incorporate and express the uncertainties using probability maps," Conrad explained. "The method enables effective risk analysis and designing robust food defense strategies."

Future work for the team will include scaling the analysis up to the company or industry level as well as mapping commodity flows into, out of and within a geographic region.

Ultimately, NISAC intends to work with partners in business and federal and state agencies to ascertain whether the agencies have a business case for adopting the method.

If there is, the team will seek to help achieve wide acceptance of using data analysis to assess risk.

Building on techniques and knowledge developed at NISAC over the past four years, the work was initiated with funding from Sandia's Laboratory Directed Research and Development program and continued with funding from the Department of Homeland Security.

"If stochastic mapping was widely used now, perhaps outbreaks, such the recent ones involving salmonella, could be more quickly tracked down and contained. Quicker containment would benefit not only consumers but also the farmers who grow fresh food for our nation and who can be severely impacted economically by uncertainties and market restrictions on sales of their products caused by delays in pinpointing an outbreak's source," Stephen says.

For more information, visit Complex Adaptive Systems of Systems (CASoS) Engineering Initiative website, or the National Infrastructure Simulation and Analysis Center (NISAC).

The International Journal of Critical Infrastructures article, "The value of utilizing stochastic mapping of food distribution networks for understanding risks and tracing contaminant pathways," written by Conrad, W.E. Beyeler and T.J. Brown, appeared in Volume 8 of the 2012 publication.

Sandia National Laboratories is a multi-program laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin company, for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration. With main facilities in Albuquerque, N.M., and Livermore, Calif., Sandia has major R&D responsibilities in national security, energy and environmental technologies and economic competitiveness.

(AP) ? Lil Wayne is not only making rap history, he's making rock 'n roll history: the rapper has surpassed Elvis Presley as the leading male with the most entries on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

Lil Wayne now has 109 songs on that chart with Thursday's debut of Game's song "Celebration," where he is a guest alongside Chris Brown, Tyga and Wiz Khalifa. Of his 109 charted songs, only 42 are led by Lil Wayne; 67 are songs where he is the featured act.

Thursday is the rapper's 30th birthday.

Presley totaled 108 songs on the Hot 100 since it launched in 1958. Presley's career kicked off before that and several of his songs ? like "Heartbreak Hotel" ? could not be included in his total number.

The "Glee" cast has the most Hot 100 entries with 204.

How does the iPhone 5 battery life stack up?

4 hrs.

Apple tells us that the iPhone 5 offers "even longer battery life" than any of its predecessors, but what does that really mean? Can the new smartphone keep up ?with ?? or beat ? the competition?

Laptop Mag's Mark Spoonauer conducted some thorough tests while reviewing the iPhone 5, just as he does when checking out other smartphones, to find out.

"Our test goes out and surfs 50 of the most popular websites in succession every 60 seconds," he told me,?in describing the testing procedures Laptop Mag sets up. "It's meant to mimic how people use their phones.?Every minute or so, you might take it out of your pocket and use it."

Apple claims that the iPhone 5 has enough battery power to offer "up to 8 hours of browsing on a cellular connection, up to 8 hours of talk time, and up to 10 hours of video playback time." In?Spoonauer's tests, the device "lasted 7 hours and 13 minutes."

To put that into perspective, consider that the Samsung Galaxy S III, a key?competitor, lasted for six hours and 55 minutes in Laptop Mag's tests. The iPhone 4S lasted five hours and 54 minutes, the HTC One X lasted 5 hours and 59 minutes, the Samsung?Galaxy Nexus lasted 3 hours and 40 minutes. The current champ, when it comes to battery life, is?the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx, with a battery life of 8 hours and 25 minutes, according to Laptop Mag's tests.

"It simply has a bigger capacity battery," says Spoonauer, referring to the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx. "At some point physics has to take over." There's only so much that Apple's clever software tweaks can do to boost the life of a rather small battery. Of course a device such as the?Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx stands a chance of outrunning the iPhone 5 thanks to sheer capacity. "It's amazing that it lasts as long as it does, given how small the battery is in comparison to the competition," Spoonauer points out.

"For the [battery] size, I think that the iPhone 5 offers fairly good battery life," he concludes before cautioning that he has seen some complaints about battery life?on Apple-centric forums.?

We put a lot of trust in Spoonauer's quantitative tests, though, and until the anecdotal evidence of poor battery performance is overwhelming, we'll maintain our faith in his assessment. This little gadget seems to last "longer on a charge than most 4G LTE phones."

Waitrose digital editor Courtney Freedman-Thompson said of the plans: ?We know that our customers are increasingly viewing video content online so we wanted to develop Waitrose TV to provide shoppers with new inspiration and recipe ideas in an engaging way. We?ve made it really easy for shoppers to buy ingredients for the recipes they like, so they can cook them at home. We?re delighted to be working with Red Bee Media on this exciting new initiative.?

Red Bee Media?s creative director Andy Bryant reflected the mood on the other side of the partnership, as he summarised: ?With the dynamic growth of TV across multiple platforms, brands now have exciting opportunities to use online video to grow their business. We?re delighted to be working with Waitrose in helping them to implement their innovative online video ambitions.?

While they are notable for a slightly more expensive selection of foods in their range of outlets, will Waitrose?s effort to create digital content be seen as more universally appealing?

Hermit crab moves into 3-D printed Guggenheim-shaped shell

15 hrs.

An Austrian artist has coerced some hermit crabs into adopting shells created by a 3-D printer ? shells in the shape of the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Hermit crabs don't actually make their own shells, but rather?find ones that once belonged to snails and other creatures. But population imbalances and other ecological troubles have led to a shortage of shells, and consequently hermit crabs have moved into things like beer cans and other trash.

A project started in 2011 called Project Shellter aimed to use Makerbot printers to create perfect little 3-D printed shells, and has successfully made a number of homes for stricken crabs. Austrian?art student Peter Moosgaard decided to take things a step further and use the shell as a platform for expression. His crabs get shells that look like the Guggenheim.

He created the aquarium installation?as part of his program at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, and it's an ongoing work because the crabs constantly grow out of their "shells." New ones must be printed, and in the meantime the crabs in the tank compete over the existing ones.

You can see one crab living happily in its Guggenheim below, but be sure to check out the more artfully composed videos Moosgaard has?up on his Vimeo channel.

Internet Marketing: Tips And Strategies For Success | Internet ...

Many people are hoping for success in the world of Internet business, so it is important to create a strategy that works and is unique. If you do not do this you may just fail as a business. Keep reading for the Internet marketing best practices.

Creating internal links which include keywords is another good SEO practice. You should keep customers on your page for as long as possible by providing them links to fresh content. Keep your audience engaged through internal linking that can boost your site?s search rankings.

You need to create a great site before worrying about getting it ranked. Building a great website is the first essential step in web business. The easier your site is to navigate and operate, the less tweaking you?ll need to do in the future.

When considering advertising your site, evaluate the different ways you can go about that. There are several methods to attract more business including developing a blog, posting on several social networking sites and word of mouth. There are a lot different tactics to draw business. You need to get creative.

The advertisement of your product should always be positive and inspiring. Concentrate on the value your product or service will add to their life. Tell them how it will make their life better. The more you focus on what they want out of the product, and how your product delivers that, the more buys you will have.

It is essential to invest some time into learning web design. CSS and HTML are a few of the key things to learn to begin designing websites; you can find information about these, and other components of web design, on the Internet. Commit at least a half hour each day to learn the basics and soon you will have enough web design knowledge.

A great way to advertise on the Internet and get your business noticed is with video marketing. Putting videos on your page or blog will grab the attention of customers. An interesting title and a unique picture will grab the attention of potential clients and possibly produce sales.

The more ways you offer to take payments, the simpler it is for customers to purchase items on your site. Not everyone has credit cards or even a bank account, so offering another option can help increase your sales.

Look at this great internet marketing tip. Be very clear with your customers that their information is completely safe with you. You should let your customers know you protect and respect their privacy by publishing a privacy policy. Your customers will be assured that the information that they give you is safe. They will be more likely to purchase what you?re selling if they know you are protecting their identity.

Emailing a catalog or a flyer with links for similar products is a good followup to customers who buy products or services from you. For example, if you run a site for books and they have bought a cookbook, send them links to all the other cookbooks you offer. You will see higher sales if you tailor your links or emails to customers? past purchases.

If you are already using internet marketing, you know which of your products are top sellers. Your next step should be to use them as flagpoles for additional sales. Centered around your big selling products, identify and advertise all complementary products. Any product that is complimentary to your main sellers will get a boost because they don?t require as much promotion as anything unrelated would.

While a few bells and whistles can enhance your site, avoid making it too busy or distracting. When someone comes to your website you have about five seconds to capture their attention and make them want to stay. If you can?t capture their attention during this very brief time period, they will click out of your site.

If you have a website that sells goods and services, then it is important that you invest in third-party security for financial transactions. There are a lot of trusted security services. They assure that the problems with the financial transaction re minimal. This service will cost money, but it?s one of the costs of doing business safely.

A good internet marketing tip is to be aware of your competition. You can check your competition?s site to see what they have. You can also investigate their traffic stats and compare them to your site.

Knowledge of your competitors is one of the keys to successfully marketing your business. If you?re aware of what the competition is selling and how they are selling it, you can tweak your own products and services so that your offerings are superior. This is a key component in Internet marketing.

Fill your website with a wide range of descriptive, evocative words. Adjectives, used intelligently, will improve the item descriptions featured on your site. Think up your own adjectives and jargon, and surprise people with your clever interpretations. Your customers will want to come back just for your content!

After reading these tips, you should have a better idea of what makes an Internet marketing campaign successful. With dedication and diligence, you can adopt practices that will inevitably result in improved customer relationships, higher sales, and more favorable recognition in the business world

Discus Fish Disease: How to cure Them | My Handy Infos

Pet owners need to comprehend types of discus fish disease in order for them to be able to be aware of the signs or symptoms and also get assistance immediately just before anything gets worse. Remember that discus fish are costly pets you would not desire your investment to simply die. Aside from that, they?re extremely active pets and you may easily get attached to them. As a pet owner, you would want the best care for them.

Prevention is better than cure. Discus fish disease as soon as this hits is extremely tough to treat. There isn?t much study about how human beings can help them, which is why owners need to make certain to provide them the best living conditions saving them from getting virtually any discus fish disease.

One of the typical discus fish diseases is what we call hole in the head. The signs and symptoms involve a little pinhole size development that can be observed on the head near the eyes and the mouth region. It is said to be caused by a protozoan infection and when left unattended immediately it might lead them to die. Cure it using a soluble antibiotic that may be seen in pet shops. Mix it in the water and make sure the water temperature is at 32 degree Celsius. Keep the water aerated before placing the medicine in order for it to be effective. Assume 3 days for it to get solved.

Another kind of discus fish disease could be the gill flu. This is harder to resolve because the disease could ruin the immune system of the fish, which will make it harder to stop the problem considering that the fish won?t respond to treatment right away. The discus fish will have difficult time breathing and then can collapse on the surface of the water disabling them from going swimming and the fish can turn into a dark pale color. Recommendations of using formalin and potassium permanganate coupled with fluke tabs are seen to be the cure. Use it on interval in the span Four weeks and ensure that there are no larvae which will remain in the water to avoid this from occurring once again.

To avoid this from happening, ensure that the fish tank has excellent filtration and that the water is free from germs. Aside from that, provide them with clean foods that are safe and also to give them vitamins. Keep these in mind and you can help prevent discus fish disease.

Discus fish disease pictures can help you recognize the issues. Additional information can be found at http://www.discusfishpro.com.
