Sony drops appeal against UK ICO fine over 2011 PSN breach

Sony has given up its appeal against the fine issued by the UK's Information Commissioner?s Office regarding negligence in the famed hack of Playstation Network in 2011.

CVG reports the firm was assessed a ?250,000 penalty at the beginning of this year and, after going through the initial appeal process, has decided to throw in the towel.

Sony made it clear that the withdraw wasn't an admission of guilt, but instead its only option to avoid disclosing sensitive data ? which it surely would have had to do to continue its appeal.

"After careful consideration we are withdrawing our appeal," a Sony rep said.

"This decision reflects our commitment to protect the confidentiality of our network security from disclosures in the course of the proceeding. We continue to disagree with the decision on the merits."
