1 Mission.: Treating mental illness in childhood can make all the ...

It's awe inspiring what the brain can do. As a child, our brain goes through rapid changes as it develops. The brain is able at a young age to learn, grow and develop as the most complex organ in our body. This is why diagnosing and treating mental illness at a young age is so crucial. The earlier treatment for a mental illness begins, the better chance a child has developing into a healthy individual. At that age with the proper treatment, the brain can be trained to overcome the developmental disabilities that can go on to cripple adults.

Here are some facts to consider when looking at children with mental illness, via Metro NY:
  1. Four million children and adolescents in this country suffer from a serious mental disorder that causes significant functional impairments at home, at school and with peers.
  2. Half of all lifetime cases of mental disorders begin by age 14. Despite effective treatments, there are long delays, sometimes decades, between the first onset of symptoms and when people seek and receive treatment. An untreated mental disorder can lead to a more severe, more difficult to treat illness and to the development of co-occurring mental illnesses.
  3. Approximately 50 percent of students age 14 and older who are living with a mental illness drop out of high school. This is the highest dropout rate of any disability group
  4. Early and effective mental health treatment can prevent a significant proportion of delinquent and violent youth from future violence and crime. It also enables children and adolescents to succeed in school, to develop socially and to fully experience the developmental opportunities of childhood.

The final one we'll give you is arguably the most important: in any given year, only 20 percent of children with mental disorders are identified and receive mental health services. With mental health numbers increasing each year, it's important now more than ever to make sure that all children receive the help they need.?
