Iran escalating efforts to destabilize region - Panetta

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Outgoing U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta accused Iran of an intensified campaign to destabilize the Middle East by smuggling anti-aircraft weapons to militant allies, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

"There is no question when you start passing MANPADS around, that becomes a threat, not just to military aircraft but to civilian aircraft," Panetta told the newspaper in an interview. "That is an escalation."

MANPADS are shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles. Western officials have worried about the spread of such weapons and the risk they pose to airline passengers as well as to military helicopters and jets.

Yemeni forces intercepted a ship on January 23 carrying a large cache of weapons - including surface-to-air missiles - that U.S. officials suspect were being smuggled from Iran and destined for Yemeni insurgents.

"It is one of the first times we have seen it," Panetta said, referring to the seizure of MANPADS.

A Defense Department spokesman was not immediately available for comment on Panetta's remarks to the paper.

Yemen's government said the arms intercepted aboard the ship off the country's coast also included military-grade explosives, rocket-propelled grenades and bomb-making equipment.

Iran denies any interference in Yemen's affairs.

Panetta said the United States was stepping up efforts to counter the Iranian threat, and was leading a multinational exercise in the United Arab Emirates through Thursday to improve the interdiction of Iranian arms and other weapons.

He called the exercise critical to building up Arab capabilities to help halt Iranian arms transfers, including the smuggling of MANPADS.

U.S. officials have said the anti-aircraft weapons intercepted on January 23 likely were headed to northern Yemen's Houthi separatists, who are fighting the U.S.-backed government in Sanaa and have also clashed with Saudi forces.

Panetta is preparing to step down as defense secretary after 19 months in the job.

The Senate Armed Services Committee held a hearing on Thursday on the nomination of former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel to succeed Panetta.

Perhaps she was trying to make light of the awkward (live) situation or trying to push her away by embarrassing her ? which sort of worked (see the clip below). The partygoer, who does not have an STD, looked shocked and offended, calling the incident "disrespectful." ?And it was.

Whether the woman had an STD or not is sort of irrelevant, because of what the reporter was assuming about this woman's sexual behavior. Is it ever OK to publically call someone out for having an a sexually-transmitted disease, given the stigma behind it?

Like slut-shaming, this humiliation-tactic tied to sexuality is only becoming more widespread with the popularity of social media and technology ? think about how easy it is to hide behind a computer and type out that someone gets around or probably has HPV.

Given what society assumes about you when someone says you have an STD and when you're a slut: Which would you rather be called?

US economic backsliding temporary? Maybe not if 'sequester' hits.

When the government reported Wednesday that the economy shrank in the most recent quarter, forecasters generally said not to worry. This was a temporary slowdown, driven by one-time factors.

Defense spending fell by an unexpectedly large amount, and a decline in business inventories put some manufacturing activity on hold. The major storm named Sandy probably played a role as well.

But that assessment comes with an asterisk ? one that Americans including members of Congress may want to heed. Some of the ?temporary? setbacks could easily resurface if Congress doesn?t do a careful job dealing with partisan conflicts over federal spending.

It?s not unthinkable that economic growth could turn negative for a couple of quarters ? one definition of a recession ? if the automatic spending cuts known as the ?sequester? take effect as currently scheduled on March 1.

?The concern is valid,? says Rajeev Dhawan, who directs the economic forecasting center at Georgia State University in Atlanta. ?Yesterday's headline number [puts] pressure on the Congress to come to some kind of a solution on the sequester.?

Consider that economists are generally forecasting growth of about 2 percent in gross domestic product this year, and in the fourth quarter a $47 billion decline in defense spending was, by itself, sufficient to drag down the rate of GDP growth by nearly 1.3 percent.

When the economy ?paused? (that?s the word the Federal Reserve used Wednesday), planners in private businesses and at the Pentagon caused the downshift partly in response to uncertainty about the ?fiscal cliff,? the scheduled tax hikes and spending cuts that loomed at the time.

The tax side of that uncertainty has been largely addressed, but the spending cuts were merely postponed until the end of February.

Both Democrats and Republicans have said they?d like to address federal budget deficits through planned adjustments, rather than the automatic cuts ? which would be divided equally between defense spending and a large swath of non-defense programs.

Budget experts tout the idea of a bipartisan accord, for example, that would focus on reforming entitlement programs, while dealing a less-severe hit to the economy in the form of sudden spending cuts. It?s far from clear, however, that the automatic spending cuts will be avoided.

Google files patent application for touch-based, full-finger keyboard layout

Tapping on glass... it's not the future -- it's the present. Except software-based touch typing solutions haven't really extended beyond the cramped confines of mobile phones and tablets. But what if there were a touch type experience that mapped to the full extent of your digital reach? Something more akin to a typical two-handed physical keyboard? Well, that's just what Google's proposing in a patent application that's surfaced today. Filed back in September of 2011, the USPTO doc outlines a method for displaying "geometric shapes on a touch-screen display... [that correspond] to a respective finger of a user" and allow for text entry via a "sliding movement." So in layman's terms, if this ever comes to pass, you'd be able to type on glass with all ten fingers by, presumably, flicking upwards. Not sure how we feel about that just yet -- it certainly would require some extra screen real estate. Maybe even something as accommodating as this, but Nexus-flavored.

My greens guy must really like me. I mean, given how much I spend at his stand every week, how could he not? One day he went chasing after me as I made my way through the Carmel Market. Admittedly, I?d just paid for a big bag full of vegetables and absentmindedly walked away without it, but still.

Actually, I have two greens guys. One sells me fat bunches of herbs and loose salad greens ? I?m not talking about him. I?m talking about the one who on any given week has a few kinds of green beans, usually some broccoli, bright green turkish spinach when in season, and occasionally things like brussels sprouts, napa cabbage, birds eye chilis and other vegetables loved by East Asian foreign workers and erstwhile Thai backpackers.

One week, after filling my bag there with everything leafy and green, and racking up quite the bill in the process (well, in shook terms; at least I splurge on spinach and not, say, shoes), I spotted a bunch of rough, ragged green leaves that I didn?t recognize.

Mustard greens, the seller told me.

Mustard is one of the many plants that grows wild here, and this is the season for all things leafy and green, but you?re unlikely to find mustard shoots quite that beautiful growing randomly in central Tel Aviv. OK, I?ll take a bunch of those too, I told the seller. He smiled approvingly. Hard sell, right?

I spent the rest of the week thinking about what to do with them. They?re sturdy but still soft enough to eat raw, and have a distinctive flavor ? slightly spicy, slightly bitter ? and I wanted to give them pride of place as the focus of a dish. What better way to do so than served raw, as the base of a salad?

I paired them with some other market finds ? sweet fennel and pear, marinated until soft ? and tossed in some tarragon to accent the light licorice flavor of the fennel. The result is an elegant salad in shades of green with a distinctive bittersweet flavor, perfect for an early spring day such as Tu Bishvat ? Arbor Day.

As for the other greens guy ? I have the best photo of him with my son, back when the latter was a tiny thing, only two months old. He?s staring at all the people passing in front of the stand on that busy shopping day in the Carmel Market. Baby. Mind. Is. Blown. Nowadays he?d be grabbing at all those greens and trying to eat them. Rightly so.

For about 4 servings, depending how you define a serving:

half a medium-sized fennel, thinly sliced (about 100 grams, or 1/4 lb.)
one medium-sized pear, thinly sliced (about 100 grams, or 1/4 lb.)
half a medium-sized onion, sliced into thin rings (about 50 grams ? 2 oz.)
2 tablespoons wine vinegar
1/2 teaspoon sugar (you could try date honey instead; I was all out)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 bunch of mustard greens, coarsely ripped (about 200 grams, or 1/2 lb.)
big drizzle of olive oil (25 grams ? 2 tablespoons)
Optional: 2 tablespoons chopped green onion
Optional: 2 tablespoons chopped tarragon

In a bowl, mix the fennel, pear slices and onion with the vinegar, sugar and salt, and let sit for about 30 minutes, tossing occasionally to make sure the dressing is coating the fruit and vegetable slices. They should reduce in volume somewhat as the dressing pulls out their liquid.

Toss the marinated pear, onion and fennel (without the liquid) with the greens and the herbs, and drizzle liberally with olive oil. Serve.
