March passed waaaay too quickly. I was sick for half of it, which made for just a weird month in general. So? now it?s time to do the 4th-Week-of-the-Month Blog Break! For those of you don?t know what that is?it?s a time where I share blogs posts/articles from others that have inspired me or challenged me this month.
I also post a random picture of a tired animal (symbolic of me, I guess?). Yeah, not sure where that idea came from?
So in no particular order, here are some great pieces that inspired, challenged, and encouraged me in the month of March?
1. Infatuation Makes Us Very Vulnerable ? This is a really good article on love and infatuation. I?ve been thinking about that a lot over the last few years. Infatuation is something our culture views as the epitome of love?when it?s not love at all, really. And it?s actually pretty harmful (I know because I?ve been infatuated/obssessed/controlled in the past by men, and let me tell you?it?s NEVER good). These things can read to serious issues and abuse. I?m also just concerned with the romantic stories of our day and age (Twilight, Shades of Grey) that teach infatuation/control as love and are sending really mixed messages to our girls.
2. New Buzz Word: The Hybrid ? I love publishing, and this is an interesting article about how many authors are becoming ?hybrid authors.? This means they publish traditionally and self publish. The publishing world has already changed immensely over the last few years. I?m excited to see what will happen. Writers have a lot more control over their books now, and there?s just a lot of cool things you can do with social media, etc.
3. An Intro to Social Media for the?Self-Publisher ? Speaking of social media, here?s a great article on social media and how writers can use these tools effectively. I have firsthand experience with Twitter?it has given me connections, guest blog opportunites, and all sorts of cool stuff. Social media is worth investing time into! One thing I haven?t really touched yet in Goodreads. Any authors/writers that have tips for this outlet?
4. Why Must I Forgive My Horrible?Parents??!! - This is a highly moving, emotional piece on a woman?s journey to forgiving her abusive parents. This piece spoke volumes to me. Family can sometimes hurt so much, and yet it?s so worth it to forgive. People in general can hurt like hell.? I?ll tell you, I struggle with forgiveness and bitterness a lot in my life. It?s something I?ve been working on for several years. If you are wounded and struggling to forgive, please read this article. Robin is a wise woman. She also has another moving follow-up piece here.
5. The Introvert Leader?s Survival Guide ? Okay, so I?ll confess. I?m an introvert! This is becoming a hot topic for some reason (has anyone read Quiet ? the NYT Best-Seller?). Laugh as you want, but America truly is an extroverted society. It?s hard to survive. No, I don?t hate people?I enjoy their company immensely. But for me, my alone time is the most essential part of my life because it?s when I write, draw, and carry on in creativity. I focus during this time. God made me this way for a reason?so leave us introverts alone! (Can you tell I?m just a tad bitter?). This is a great piece on introversion.
6. A Few Articles About Introverts (For Teryn) ? My friend and fellow writer, Boze, is also an introvert. He compiled a list of compelling and challenging articles on the topic for me. And he put my name in the title of the post, so when I was looking through my Reader feed, I saw my name?and it was a lovely surprise! These are all great articles (there?s also one on C.S.Lewis that is quite fascinating).
7. Lesbian and Gay Relationships ? a repost from the?archives - This is a very heated debate right now. As a Christian, I want to show love to all people ? even ones I might not agree with.? I appreciated this article. Enough said.
8. Is There Such a Thing as ?Girl?Books??? ? This article talks about boys and reading, which is alwasy an interesting topic. Some say it?s harder to get boys to read. Many boys are ashamed of reading (especially ?girl books?). It?s so sad to me that boys aren?t encouraged to be themselves, but a straightjacket version of masculinity that demands never showing feelings and beating people up all the time. Let?s encourage our boys to read ?and to be themselves!
9. Teenage Activist Who Was Shot by Taliban Signs $3 Million Book Deal ? This story just brings tears to my eyes. This young woman is facing all the oppression of a society (and religion) that is truly sexist and harsh toward women. This is why I stand up for women, this is why it is so important to me that they have a voice. This is why I support anti-human trafficking causes and mentor girls younger than me. So many girls feel like they have no true voice. So many are brutally treated. This 14-year-old girl is my hero for standing up for equality. I will read your book, Malala.
10. ?.
(You tell me what the 10th should be!)

NEW YORK (AP) ? Young adult author John Green has written an introduction for a book about the teen cancer victim to whom he dedicated his best-selling novel "The Fault in Our Stars."
Penguin Young Readers Group announced Thursday that it will publish "This Star Won't Go Out: The Life and Words of Esther Grace Earl" in early 2014. Along with Green's introduction, the book will compile writings and sketches by the girl from Quincy, Mass., known for the YouTube video journal about her terminal illness.
Esther died in 2010 at age 16.
Green and J.K. Rowling were among her admirers.
The book is named for the foundation started in Esther's memory, "This Star Won't Go Out." Penguin will donate to the foundation, which aids families with children who have cancer.

You know what I don?t understand?? Portable gaming consoles.? I get the concept, I think.? It?s a console, but you can take it anywhere.? Cool, right?? Except, when I think of situations where I use a portable gaming device, I typically only have a few minutes to play.? I?m not into gaming in car rides (even the nice Vita screen is unplayable with the sun glaring), I don?t do a lot of plane rides, and when I?m at home, I would rather play a game on a proper console.? The only times where it makes sense for me to play a portable game are when I?ve got ten minutes or less to kill.? Waiting in a line, or out having a cigarette, or with whatever time I have to spare during a lunch break.? That?s why I?m baffled at the types of portable games that are popular on Vita or 3DS these days.? Hey, I loved Persona 4 Golden as much as the next person, but I would have loved it just as much if I had played in on the PlayStation 3.? Probably more, in fact.? Why does Uncharted even need a stripped down portable version?? Why did Nintendo make a port of Ocarina of Time one of the flagship launch-window titles for 3DS?? These aren?t games designed to be portable.? These are console games that require significant time investments.? What if I just want to play something for five minutes while taking a dump?
The only valid argument I?ve heard is ?what if you have to share the television with others??? Granted, that was never a problem with me.? Only child here that had her own television from an early age.? I guess my parents weren?t keen on watching endless reruns of Barney and Sesame Street.? Still, as someone who is very fond of consoles, I?ve oddly never had the desire to carry one around with me.? Brian says I?m almost certainly in the minority on that.? I say that just proves how much smarter I am than everyone else.
And don?t say I don?t know humility.? I do.? It?s what measures moisture in the air.
The kind of portable gaming sessions I want are readily available.? They?re typically found on phones.? Most of the time.? Year Walk is a bizarre horror-adventure game based on Swedish mythology.? It seems like it could be a decent title, but this is one of those cases where the game failed to grab my interest right out of the gate and I just couldn?t get into it.? I?m not a big fan of point and click games.? This is more exploration-oriented than average, but I fucking hate games where you wander around with no clue of where to go, what your objectives are, or what the ultimate goal is.? Plus, it had features I?m not too keen on, like sound-based puzzles.? I typically play my iPhone games with the sound turned off, because I have a strong desire to not annoy those around me.? I mean, more so than usual.
I didn?t finish Year Walk.? Not even close.? I spent most of the game just aimlessly shambling about.? Yea, the settings were spooky, but I would have rather played this on a console, or the Vita.? I probably should have fired this up on the iPad, where at least I could have seen things better.? But, the truth was, I didn?t want to play it anymore.? I was bored.? I think horror-adventure fans might get a lot more mileage out of this than I did.? Really, I was just disappointed that this wasn?t a game about Wicket?s first birthday.
. .
. .
. .
Get it?? Wicket was an Ewok.? Ewok sounds like Year Walk?
. .
. .
You know, Brian told me that one was no good.? I didn?t listen to him.? And now he?s gloating.? He said ?it?s too obscure a Star Wars pun and you have to make too large a logical leap to draw the connection.?? Fine.? Trying again: I thought Year Walk was boring.? Would have been better if it had starred Luke Yearwalker.
. .
. .
. .
Ridiculous Fishing has absolutely no connection to Year Walk, other than being on iPhone.? When I told someone I was reviewing this, they said ?I?ve never liked a fishing game.? Never ever ever.?? Although I can?t say the same (I was quite fond of Sega Bass Fishing when I was ten),? saying this is about fishing is like saying Punch-Out is an authentic boxing simulator.? Here, you use the tilt-controls of your phone to lower a fishing lure to the bottom of the sea.? While it?s descending,? you want to avoid touching fish.? Once you touch a fish, the descent stops and the lure starts to surface.? Any fish you touch at this point are on the hook and being reeled in.? When you reach the surface, the fish fly up in the air.? At this point, you whip out a gun and shoot them.
No, seriously.? You shoot them.? With a gun.? Okay, so it?s not the most ridiculous form of fishing I?ve ever seen.? These Lithuanians I believe have that covered.
God bless YouTube.
I?ve never, ever liked tilt-controls.? Ridiculous Fishing is the first game that I truly enjoyed because?of tilt-controls.? It just works.? It?s accurate, it feels natural, and it makes the game more fun.? And Ridiculous Fishing is perfectly suited for micro-gaming sessions.? Got five minutes to kill?? Cast a line, scoop up some fish, shoot those fuckers up, and get back to what you were doing.? It also has actual depth to it, with time-sinky upgrades and a decent (not spectacular) variety of fish to catch. ? In a sense, it?s the perfect mobile game.? My biggest complaints are how there?s no jelly-fish repellent among the items.? Well, that and the Game Center leaderboards are sort of limited.? Oh, and maybe the game is a teeny-tiny bit overpriced at $2.99.? A little steep for a game with no variety at all, especially on the iPhone market.? Of course, Year Walk cost $3.99 and it?s on the wrong platform.? It would probably make an excellent PC game, but at its price, it?s like paying LeBron James to play on your cricket team.
Year Walk was developed by Simogo and I really want to try it on a console at some point. Ouya, perhaps?
Ridiculous Fishing was developed by Vlambeer and is Chick Approved.

BOSTON (AP) ? Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has announced he won't seek re-election to an unprecedented sixth term after nearly two decades in office.
Menino told well-wishers gathered at Boston's historic Faneuil Hall Thursday afternoon that "I will leave the job that I love."
Menino's announcement came in the wake of persistent health problems including a six-week hospital state last year to treat a respiratory infection and a compression fracture in his spine. He says, "I'm back to a mayor's schedule, but not a Menino schedule"
His decision not to run is expected to spark a political stampede to fill the coveted seat.
Menino wasn't always the smoothest of political figures, but he earned a reputation as one of the hardest working, from filling potholes to shaping the city's skyline.
He also became a prominent voice nationally in favor of stricter gun control measures.

eBay's latest initiative is a little different from its more recent efforts that have focused mostly on re-branding and expanding the reach of PayPal. Sell it Forward encourages users to sell their used clothes and donate half the proceeds to Goodwill. The pilot program is currently only available in San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin, though the company is going out of its way to make the process as painless as possible for those in eligible areas. Instead of creating listings for each item, wannabe auctioneers need only fill the pre-paid mailing bag (provided by eBay) with the clothes and accessories they wish to sell. Everything else will be taken care of for them. Employees will decide if your wares are in decent enough condition to sell, create a listing and, if the item is sold within 14 days, split the proceeds between the "seller" and Goodwill. If the item remains unsold for 14 days it becomes a straight donation to the charity. If you're in one of the trial areas and want to give Sell it Forward a go yourself, hit up the source link.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Justin Timberlake's comeback album has sold nearly 1 million units its first week out.
Nielsen SoundScan announced Tuesday that the singer's third album, "The 20/20 Experience," has moved 968,000 units. It's the 19th album in Nielsen's 22-year history that has sold more than 900,000 albums in its debut week.
"20/20" is Timberlake's third album and the follow-up to his multiplatinum, Grammy-winning 2006 album, "FutureSex/LoveSounds." The new CD features the pop hit "Suit & Tie."
"The numbers are pleasantly surprising," said Tom Corson, the president and chief operating officer of RCA Records, which released Timberlake's album.
The label had projected that "20/20" would sell 500,000 to 600,000 units, Corson said.
Timberlake, 31, was strategic about promoting his comeback effort: He performed at the Grammy Awards, hosted and hit the stage at "Saturday Night Live" and spent an entire week on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon." The singer also partnered with Target for the album's deluxe edition and "20/20" streamed on iTunes a week before it was released.
Timberlake came up with the idea of a weeklong stint himself, Fallon said.
"I think he mentioned it to me like a year ago that he's working on something and wanted to do a week on our show," Fallon said Tuesday.
"20/20" is an unconventional album that features a mesh of R&B, soul, pop and futuristic sounds. The 10 tracks average seven minutes each.
Corson believes Timberlake's key to promoting the album was "less is more."
"While it felt like he was everywhere, he didn't do a lot of things because he didn't have to. But he did big things," he said.
Fallon even joked that other celebrities are trying to follow in Timberlake's footsteps with a weeklong stay on his show.
"We're getting a lot of phone calls now to do themed-weeks for people," said Fallon, who added that the show's writers and producers developed a load of material for "Timberweek."
"We have enough for another month," he said. "We could have 'Timbermonth.' Trust me, NBC is already pitching it to me."
Of the 19 albums to sell more than 900,000 in their debut week, Timberlake holds three slots. His albums with 'N Sync, 2000's "No Strings Attached" and 2001's "Celebrity," sold 2.4 million and 1.9 million in their first week, respectively. Backstreet Boys, Lil Wayne and Taylor Swift have two albums each that have hit that level.
The excitement over the new album has also boosted sales of Timberlake's other solo albums, Nielsen Co. said. Last year, "FutureSex/LoveSounds" and 2002's "Justified" sold 39,000 and 21,000 copies each, but this year they've already sold 29,000 and 17,000, respectively.
"As the marketing sort of picks up for the new record and the single goes to radio ... you definitely start to see interest," said David Bakula, Nielsen's senior vice president of client development and analytics for entertainment.
Bakula said 'N Sync sales are up, too.
"20/20" was streamed 7.73 million times on Spotify in its first week, putting it second behind the 8 million streams set by Mumford & Sons' "Babel" last year. Steve Savoca, Spotify's head of content, said Timberlake's colossal first-week numbers are another example of how streaming music helps artists sell albums.
Fallon said Timberlake worked tirelessly ahead of the five shows and he's proud of his friend's success.
"Justin was here till 11 o'clock most nights choreographing dance moves so he nailed it the next night," he said. "And he was sick at the time."
Corson said this week's success could change the expectation of Timberlake's follow-up to "20/20," which will likely be released later this year.
"It sure should," he said with a laugh. "Part two is now even more anticipated."
Timberlake could even show up for a stint on Fallon again.
"We are already talking about it," Fallon said.
